The World Health Organisation has today granted Pre-Qualification to the Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine (LAIV) Nasovac-S.

Nasovac-S LAIV is The Serum Institute of Indias’ seasonal influenza vaccine, which is administered as an intranasal spray. WHO PQ certification allows The Serum Institute  to make Nasovac-S available in PAHO and Unicef countries. LAIVs are currently found in the influenza vaccine schedules of both the UK and the USA.

The Serum Institute was founded by Dr. Cyrus S. Poonawalla to ensure that vaccines did not remain a luxury for children around the world.  Its driving ethos is that “it is every person’s right to have access to affordable vaccines”.

Dr Cyrus Poonawalla was named one of Bill Gates’ seven ‘Vaccine Heroes’ and was awarded the Albert B. Sabin Humanitarian Award and Award for Scientific Excellence for the scientific advancements and philanthropic work of the Serum Institute.

No LAIV is currently registered in New Zealand.
